A Guide to Vegetarian and Vegan Dining in Grand Cayman

As a Caribbean island, Grand Cayman’s cuisine is defined by fresh seafood. Dishes like conch fritters, Caribbean lobster, and turtle stew are local favorites you can find across the island, with  Cayman-style beef and jerk chicken also commonly listed on menus. Vegans and vegetarians may be wary of traveling to such a seafood and meat-loving island, but will be pleasantly surprised by the abundance of restaurants, stores, and traditional meals that will suit their tastes.

At Rum Point Club, we serve a mix of vegan, vegetarian, meat-based, and gluten-free dishes at both our Rum Deck and Solis Restaurant, celebrating a diversity of cuisines and flavors. To help you navigate the local culinary scene, we’ve created this guide to vegetarian and vegan dining in Grand Cayman, including some special local dishes. Grand Cayman Vegan and Vegetarian Grocery Shopping

If you’re planning on cooking meals between eating out, there are plenty of grocery store options to do your shopping. Kirk Market in George Town has one of the best and widest ranges of specialty foods on the island, stocking tofu, alternative meats, and dairy-free desserts. Foster’s Supermarket, which has locations in George Town, West Bay, and the East End, also has a variety of options like tempeh, tofurkey, and plant-based cheeses.

For some added deliciousness, you can also order from Saucha Conscious Food, which delivers fresh breads, vegan dips and dressings, as well as delectable desserts like peanut butter cheesecake!

Vegetarian and Vegan Cayman Dishes

Not only are there great restaurants and markets that offer specialty foods, but Cayman cuisine itself has vegan and vegetarian dishes you’ll absolutely want to try.

  • Custard-top cornbread: One of the most popular Cayman desserts, custard-top cornbread is most commonly served at street festivals. A rich dessert, vegetarians with a sweet tooth will certainly want more.
  • Cassava cake: Known as the national dessert of the Cayman Islands, cassava cake is not just absolutely delicious, but vegans can indulge in it too! Made with coconut milk, cassava, and spices like nutmeg and cinnamon, cassava cake is a must-have while in Cayman.
  • Johnnycake: With Jamaican roots, the johnnycake is loved across the Caribbean. These fried dough biscuits make for the perfect vegetarian snack, best enjoyed with cheese.
  • Mudslide: The Mudslide is a unique Caribbean cocktail that has its origins right here in Rum Point! Creamy and caffeinated, having a Mudslide is customary when you visit us at the Rum Point Club, where our bartenders will whip up the perfect drink.
