Best Time to Sail in Grand Cayman

Thanks to its prime location in the Caribbean, Grand Cayman is an excellent destination for sailing year-round! The calm waters and clear skies ensure you will almost always be on an even keel.

However, for the absolute best sailing conditions, we would recommend going out into the water between November and April during the dry season. Between May and October is the island’s wet season, where you’ll experience sporadic showers.

Before shoving off, it’s always important to check the weather. You can have a look at Windfinder for a detailed forecast, especially if you plan on sailing yourself.

Learn How to Sail in Grand Cayman

The Cayman Islands has a long and notable sailing history. Due to the islands’ seclusion, sailing was essential for connecting the archipelago to the rest of the world. The sport has remained a vital part of Cayman culture, with races, tours, and leisure trips taking place all year.

This makes Grand Cayman an excellent place to learn how to sail yourself! If you’ve always dreamt of helming your own boat, you can sign up for sailing lessons. The Cayman Islands Sailing Club, near George Town, has operated since 1965 as a bastion of sailing on the islands. They offer camps, youth programs, and adult sailing lessons, for whether you’re just beginning your journey or seeking to race!

There are few experiences as blissful as sitting back and cruising through the waters surrounding Grand Cayman. Luckily, there are plenty of sailing excursions and tours on offer across the island, catering to a diversity of tastes. These are some of the best sailing trips in Grand Cayman:

Stingray City Sailing Tour

One of the most popular sailing trips in Grand Cayman is to go to the iconic Stingray City. Most charters in Grand Cayman journey here, where guests can disembark into the shallows and come up close to the friendly “puppies of the sea”. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interact with these amazing creatures in a way that is safe for both you and the wildlife!

Rum Point Club is located a mere 15-minute boat ride away from Stingray City, making it an excellent jumping-off point. You can join us for our Stingray City Tour from Rum Point, where we’ll sail on board our comfortable 65-foot catamaran before diving in with the stingrays.

You can also combine your Stingray City experience with some snorkeling as part of our Stingray City Sail from Rum Point. After mingling with the stingrays, we’ll head to a nearby reef. Put on your mask and snorkel and discover a kaleidoscopic scene of coral and fishes!

If you’re interested in doing some more snorkeling during your trip, then check out our Snorkeling Guide to Grand Cayman for a thorough overview.
